How Families Pay for Senior Living

Private Pay (Most Common)

Using personal savings, retirement funds, or proceeds from selling a home. Many families sell the family home to fund senior living.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Policies vary widely. Some cover assisted living, memory care, and nursing home care. Check the policy for specific coverage and daily/monthly limits.

Veterans Benefits (Aid & Attendance)

Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for extra monthly benefits to help cover care costs. Contact your local VA office or we can provide guidance.

Medicare vs. Medicaid

Medicare does NOT cover long-term senior living. Medicaid may cover some costs, but eligibility is strict and varies by state. Most assisted living is not covered.

Key Questions About Costs

  • 1. What is the base monthly rate and what does it include?
  • 2. How often do rates increase and by how much historically?
  • 3. What is the policy if care needs increase — how is pricing adjusted?
  • 4. Are there entrance fees or community fees?
  • 5. What is the billing and payment schedule?
